With the introduction of High Speed Trains (HSTs) to the Midland line route to London Class 45/1 locomotives were gradually transferred to other passenger duties including trans Pennine workings originating at Liverpool Lime Street. The 1100 Scarborough - Liverpool Lime Street approaches St. Helens Junction on 15th January 1983 with 45106 in charge. This locomotive was the last of the class to work a passenger train on 3rd February 1989.
